What God’s Love Does for Us: Devotional Thoughts from 1 John 4:7-12

The Love of GodFocus Verse:  1 John 4:9 & 10

By this the love of God was manifested in us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through Him.  In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

A few years back I was in a locker room of a golf club with several other men.  A cell phone on a bench nearby rang.  One of the guys, Jim, quickly picked it up and engaged the hands free mode.  We all stopped talking so we could listen.

JIM: “Hello.”

WOMAN: “Honey, it’s me.  Are you at the club?”

JIM: “Yes”

WOMAN: “I am at the mall now and found this beautiful dress.  It’s a $1,000. Is it OK if I buy it?”

JIM: “Sure, …go ahead if you like it that much.”

WOMAN: “I also stopped by the Mercedes dealership and saw the new 2003 models.  I saw one I really liked.”

JIM: “How much?”

WOMAN: “$60,000.”

JIM: “OK, but for that price I want it to have all the options.”

WOMAN: “Great!  Oh, and one more thing….The house we wanted last year is back on the market. They’re asking $950,000.”

JIM: “Well, go ahead and make an offer, but no higher than $900,000.”

WOMAN: “OK. I’ll see you later! I love you!”

JIM: “Bye, I love you, too.”

Jim hung up the phone while the rest of us in the locker room looked at him shocked.  Then he asked, “Does anyone know who this phone belongs to?”

I love that story!  It always makes me laugh.  But, it also reminds me of God’s love and what He did for me.  Jim took someone else’s place on the phone, but Jesus took my place on the cross.

1 John 4:10 tells us that God sent Jesus as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.  This means that Jesus bore our sins, carried them away, and accepted the punishment we deserved.  He took our place, and now we can have life if we allow Him to live through us (verse 9).

What has God’s love done for us?

  1. It has shown us what love is.
    • Love is sacrificing for others by giving up our own plans for them.
    • Love is action.
  2. It has taken away God’s anger over our sins because:
    • Jesus accepted our punishment.
    • Our sins were place on Him.
    • Now God see Jesus’ righteousness when He looks at us instead of our sins.
  3. Finally, God’s love has made a way for us to live.
    • Without Jesus, we are dead in our sins.
    • With Jesus, we are made alive if we live through Him.
    • Further, the life we now live is real life because it now includes a personal friendship with God.

Real Choices:

Jesus stood in for us.  Other people all around us each day need someone to stand in for them.  We can’t take their sin away, but we can go to them and love them in the same manner that God has loved us.  Take a chance today and be a picture for the love of God.

Digging Deeper:

Read 1 John 2:2.  Consider God’s great love for all people.  Does your love for your family, neighbors, schoolmates, or work associates stand close to God’s?

Pray:

Thank you Lord for showing your love for me today.  Let me never forget your sacrifice, and help me to love in sacrifical ways too.
