Post Transplant Update # 1:

First, allow me to apologize for not updating anyone yesterday.  I was unable to leave Bethany’s side for even a minute yesterday, and I sent Angela, Jeanie, and Jonathan to the Ronald MacDonald House to sleep.  None of us had slept since Monday night.

Angela and I were able to see Bethany around 5:15 a.m., Thursday for the first time.  She looked really good for someone who had just come from a 9 hour surgery.

She was sedated, but immediately looked at us when we spoke to her.  After this, we brought Angela’s mom and Jonathan back to see Bethany.  Angela stayed with Bethany while I got some breakfast.  Then Angela, Jonathan, and Jeanie back to the Ronald MacDonald house to sleep while I stayed with Bethany.

Bethany’s new liver is doing great!  Her liver function is good, and we have no blood clots as of this morning.  They have done 2 ultrasounds on her, and her blood flow through her liver is great.  That’s the good news.

On the flip side, Bethany is in a lot of pain.  It seems that her normal stomach pain is not bothering her much if any.  But, pain because of her surgery is really giving her trouble.  This is a little unusual for a normal patient, but since Bethany has had chronic pain for the past seven months, this is not entirely unusual.

Bethany’s ongoing pain has weakened her body’s recovery time.  She has been using all her strength to deal with her daily pain, but when a new pain is introduced, she hasn’t been able to deal with it as well.  Thus, last month when Bethany had a port surgically put in, it took her 3 days to get over this procedure.  She experience a lot more pain than would normally be expected, but after a few days, her body adjusted and she did great.

We believe this is the case as well with her new surgery.  Even though the old pain is most likely gone, the nerve endings are still very active, and will take a few days to quiet down.

I stayed with Bethany all day yesterday until about 7 p.m. last night when Angela relieved me for the night.  My parents, Bill and Kay Kendrick, are here with us along with Angela’s mom.  My parents came back to the hospital around 2 p.m. yesterday, and stayed until about 8 p.m.  They had come for a short visit, and had only been at our home for 3 hours prior to us getting the phone call about Bethany.

Although Bethany is having a lot of pain from the surgery, she still has made so great improvements.  Once she had her breathing tube removed, she immediately began to talk and try to move.  Moving proved too much to begin with, but after several hours she started moving more.  Any movement causes great pain, but she is still trying to move and sit up because she knows this will help her heal quicker.

We are about to head back to the hospital.  I talked with Angela earlier, and Bethany is still in a lot of pain.  They decided to increase her pain meds, and now Bethany is sleeping.

  1. Please continue to pray for Bethany’s recovery.
  2. Continue to pray for no blood clots, no infections, help with pain management.
  3. And that we could get Bethany out of the bed today.

Thank you again for all the great emails, calls, texts, and postings on Caringbridge and Facebook.  We are passing these along to Bethany as words of encouragement to Bethany throughout the day.

We love you and feel so blessed to have such an awesome family and wonderful friends!

In His grace,
Taylor, Angela, Bethany, and Jonathan
