We Give God Praise for Answered Prayers!!! Test and Procedure Results and What is ahead…

Psalm 103:1-5

1 Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and all that is within me,
    bless his holy name!
2 Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and forget not all his benefits,
3 who forgives all your iniquity,
    who heals all your diseases,
4 who redeems your life from the pit,
who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy,
5 who satisfies you with good

so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

If you want a real blessing, read the entire Psalm.  It is amazing!

Well, as you might have guest, we got great results yesterday.  The doctor was able to perform the PTC and get into Bethany’s bile duct!  Praise God!  Thank you so much for praying for this.  This was huge!  Because they were able to access Bethany’s bile duct they were able to see what was causing problems.  If they had not been able to get in, Bethany would have needed to return to major surgery.  It would have been like having a transplant all over again.  So, THANK YOU, AND PRAISE TO GOD!

Once they got into Bethany’s bile duct, they discovered that there was a blockage.  The blockage appears to be scar tissue at the point where they connected Bethany’s new liver to her bowel.  They have inserted a drainage tube through the blocked area and into her small intestines.  For the next day or so they will be draining off the accumulated bile.

On Monday, they will take Bethany back into surgery to try and remove the scar tissue causing the blockage.  They were unable to do this Friday because they did not have a certain tool necessary for the procedure.  When the doctor went into the bile duct, he inserted a small balloon to open up the duct, but once he removed it, the duct immediately closed up again.  Monday they will use a tool which has a knife on the end of the balloon to cut away the scar tissue to help remold the duct and keep it open.

Right now the drainage tube is the only thing keeping Bethany’s bile duct open.  The plan for now will be to keep the drainage tube in for 4-6 months to help reshape the bile duct so it will remain open.  We will need to return to Atlanta about every six weeks to see if we’re being successful with reshaping her bile duct and to exchange her tube for a larger tube.  There is a chance this won’t work.  If reshaping the bile duct is unsuccessful, they will eventually need to operate on Bethany again and do a revision of the connection between the liver and her bowel.  This is “tricky” according to the surgeon, and is similar to her having another transplant surgery.

How to Pray:

  1. Pray for Bethany’s recovery.  She is extremely sore and has a lot of associated pain from the drainage tube.  Her doctor has said that it will heal, but there will be ongoing discomfort from it.
  2. Bethany had a very rough night.  She’s been throwing up and running a high fever.  We have her on two different antibiotics.  Please pray we can get this under control quickly.  I’m sure Bethany’s Monday procedure will be delayed if she is not better.
  3. THIS IS A BIG PRAYER REQUEST!! Pray infection will not continue to be an issue for Bethany with her drainage tube over the next many months.  Basically, if Bethany runs a fever of greater than 100.5, we will need to admit Bethany back into the hospital.  She could go septic very quickly.  Considering Bethany’s recent history, plus her low immune system, we really need people praying Bethany won’t get any infections.
  4. Pray for Bethany’s soon return to school:
    1. Bethany could return to school by Monday the 23rd.
    2. Please pray for her as she begin to catch up on work.
    3. Pray for understanding teachers.
    4. Pray she’ll be able to maintain her grades (she currently has a 3.5 GPA).
    5. Pray her friends will be encouraging.
    6. Pray she won’t catch any infections from school.
    7. Pray no one will bump into her or hurt her accidentally.
    8. Pray for some girls who have been mean to Bethany recently, and that they would stop trying to bully her (Bethany has stood strong in the face of these girls, but she really doesn’t need the added stress…nor do mom and dad).
  5. Pray Bethany will have a good attitude and heal quickly.

I think that should cover everything!

Thank you for praying for Bethany.  Your prayers are a blessing and sacrifice before the Lord.  God is hearing them, and His name is being made famous because of them.

Taylor, Angela, Bethany, and Jonathan
